5th Grade General Music class meets 90 days - every other session, 23 consecutive days per session.

Students in 5th grade General Music will learn about the music and composers from various American historical periods through singing songs and listening to musical excerpts. Students also study music theory and notation (reading music) using interactive software in the music lab. Emphasis is placed on class participation and a curriculum that is interdisciplinary with other academic subjects.

American Folks Songs (Part 1, 1650 - 1865)
Building America In Song
John Phillips Sousa (The March King)
Making Music Our Own
Music Ace Maestro
Stephen Foster (America's First Great Songwriter)

Grading:

Class Participation = 50% (see attached participation rubric for grading details)


Written Assessment = 50% (can be comprised of tests, quizzes, and/or workpackets)


Depending on the session class is held in, participation can count anywhere from 75 to 100% of the total grade.
Some sessions will not be given a written assessment.
